According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Wednesday June 10, 2026, Barcelona have decided against activating the purchase option for Marcus Rashford, bringing an end to what had initially looked like a strong chance of a permanent move following his loan spell from Manchester United.
Rashford spent the 2025/26 season on loan at the La Liga champions, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists as Barcelona went on to secure the league title. Despite those numbers and his consistent involvement in the squad, the club have now opted not to proceed with the agreed £26m buy clause, which was set to expire in mid-June.
According to reports in Spain, the decision comes down to two major factors that influenced Barcelona’s long-term planning under their current sporting structure.
The first key reason is tactical suitability. Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona have placed significant emphasis on high-intensity pressing, defensive contribution from forwards, and structured off-the-ball work. While Rashford offered attacking output and directness, concerns were raised internally about his consistency in pressing and defensive transitions compared to other attacking options in the squad. This was considered an important factor in evaluating whether he fits the long-term system the club are trying to build.
The second reason relates to age profile and squad planning. Rashford is approaching 29, while Barcelona are increasingly focused on younger players who can develop within the squad over a longer period. In this context, alternatives such as Anthony Gordon were viewed more favourably due to their age, energy levels, and potential long-term resale value, aligning more closely with Barcelona’s recruitment strategy.
