Former senator Shehu Sani has reacted to reports that Peter Obi may take legal action against Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged defamatory statements, saying there is nothing wrong with seeking redress in court.

In a Facebook post, Sani noted that every citizen has the right to approach the courts whenever they believe their reputation has been damaged. According to him, the court remains a place where people can seek justice, protection, and resolution of disputes.

The former lawmaker explained that public figures and ordinary citizens alike have the right to file defamation or libel suits if they feel harmed by statements made against them. He added that he has personally been involved in such cases, both as a defendant and as a complainant.

Sani also cautioned social media users against making allegations or using offensive language without evidence to support their claims. He stressed that anyone who makes public accusations should be prepared to defend them and bear the financial cost of legal representation if challenged in court.

He further advised users not to be influenced by social media popularity, warning that online supporters are unlikely to provide legal or financial assistance when lawsuits arise.

Sani concluded by noting that while some public office holders may choose to ignore defamatory comments, private citizens are often more likely to pursue legal action to protect their reputation.

In his words, “Peter is reportedly dragging Keneth to Court for defamation. There’s nothing wrong with that. Every citizen has the right to do that.”
