According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) giants Rivers United have survived a major scare after their official team bus was involved in a road accident on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

The crash occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, shortly after the squad departed from their training camp.

The team was traveling to Awka, Anambra State, ahead of their crucial President’s Federation Cup round of 16 encounter against Nasarawa United.

In an official statement following the crash, management addressed the public to quell rising anxiety over the condition of the squad members.

The club confirmed that multiple individuals within the traveling contingent sustained injuries during the road mishap. However, management assured fans that everyone is currently out of danger.

Rivers United announced: “The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported.”

Medical personnel are currently treating all affected individuals, who are in stable condition. The management promised to provide subsequent updates regarding their travel modifications and any potential rescheduling of the upcoming President’s Federation Cup fixture.

The Port Harcourt-based side secured their round of 16 spot on Monday with a 3-2 victory over Rangers International.

The President’s Federation Cup serves as Rivers United’s final opportunity to claim silverware this season, after finishing second in the league with 67 points, just one point behind the eventual league champions, Rangers.
