Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has called for equal treatment of Nigerians living and working in South Africa, saying recent reports of xenophobic attacks and discriminatory practices are inconsistent with the cordial relations between the two countries.

Speaking during an interview on TVC News, on Wednesday, 17 June, 2026, the minister reacted to concerns over the alleged harassment of Nigerians in South Africa, where some foreign nationals have reportedly been asked to prove their identity and nationality.

To illustrate Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a welcoming business environment, Odumegwu-Ojukwu pointed to the significant presence of South African businesses operating across the country without facing similar treatment.

“There are over 120 South African companies operating in Nigeria. Nobody is asking them to provide proof of identity. Nobody is asking South African staffs that go to work there whether they are South Africans or Nigerians and nobody is taking over their shops or their businesses.”

The minister said Nigeria has never subjected South African businesses or their employees to discrimination despite their extensive investments in the country. She argued that Nigerians residing in South Africa deserve the same level of respect, protection and freedom to live and conduct lawful businesses without intimidation.
