In a recent interview on Symfoni TV on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Kassim Afegbua, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, spoke about internal tensions within opposition political structures and the possible implications for their stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the discussion, Afegbua addressed concerns surrounding the cohesion of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) and the challenges facing key political figures within the movement as preparations for the next election continue to intensify.
Speaking during the interview, Afegbua stated, “I am seeing a lot of crisis in the NDC that will consume him.” He made the remark while responding to questions about the state of opposition politics and the future of prominent political actors such as Peter Obi within the evolving political landscape.
According to Afegbua, internal disagreements and competing interests within political coalitions often pose significant risks to their long-term stability, especially when such groups are preparing for major electoral contests. He suggested that unresolved tensions could weaken political structures if not properly managed.
The Edo State Commissioner further noted that Nigeria’s opposition politics is currently marked by intense negotiations, strategic repositioning, and ideological differences among key stakeholders. He argued that these factors contribute to periodic instability within political alliances.
Afegbua also emphasized that political movements must prioritize unity, discipline, and clear leadership direction in order to remain competitive in national elections. He maintained that without internal cohesion, even strong political platforms could struggle to maintain relevance.
He referenced Peter Obi in the context of broader opposition dynamics, suggesting that prominent figures within the space are closely observing developments within their respective political alignments as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
He concluded by stating that the coming months will be critical for all political coalitions in Nigeria, adding that their ability to manage internal disputes and present unified positions will significantly influence their electoral prospects.
