According to a report by PUNCH on Friday 1st May 2026, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed suggestions that the party is facing a leadership vacuum following the Supreme Court judgment that nullified its recent national convention in Ibadan.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, insisted that the party’s leadership remains intact, stressing that Abdulrahman Mohammed is still the National Chairman while Samuel Anyanwu remains National Secretary.
He rejected claims that the Board of Trustees (BoT) has assumed control of the party, describing such assertions as unconstitutional and misleading.
According to him, the Supreme Court ruling only dealt with the validity of the Ibadan convention held on November 15 and 16, which produced a rival leadership structure, and did not address issues of suspension or expulsion of any party officials.
Mohammed explained that the apex court simply invalidated the convention for violating existing court orders and dismissed the appeal challenging it, but made no ruling on the internal disciplinary actions being circulated in public discourse.
He maintained that the PDP has no leadership crisis or vacuum, arguing that the existing structure continues to function legally and effectively.
The faction also took aim at former Senate President and BoT chairman Adolphus Wabara, alleging that his tenure had already expired and that he no longer holds legitimate authority within the party’s structure; It further stated that Senator Mao Ohuabunwa remains the recognised BoT leader.
Mohammed urged the public and media to disregard what he called attempts to distort the Supreme Court judgment for political advantage, insisting that there is no basis for claims of a caretaker takeover.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, in a narrow 3–2 ruling, struck out the Ibadan convention, holding that it breached prior judicial restrictions placed on the party.
In response to the judgment, Wabara had earlier declared that the BoT would intervene to stabilise the party and convened emergency meetings of key PDP organs, further fueling internal disputes over the interpretation of the ruling.
