According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, stated that the Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on Thursday has settled the prolonged leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, affirming that the party remains intact and united despite earlier disagreements.

Speaking to journalists at his residence in Abuja on Thursday, Wike rejected suggestions that the party was still divided, stressing that the ruling of the apex court had provided clear direction on the matter and removed any uncertainty surrounding the leadership tussle.

He explained that his position on the issue was not based on opposition to the party itself but rather on dissatisfaction with certain individuals within it, adding that his concerns were directed at those he believes have contributed negatively to the country’s situation.

The Supreme Court, in a closely contested 3–2 decision, invalidated the national convention of the party that took place in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025, during which a leadership structure supported by Seyi Makinde had emerged.

According to the majority ruling, the convention did not comply with existing court orders that mandated the party to fulfill specific conditions before conducting such an exercise, thereby rendering the process improper under the law.

The judgment further criticized the party for proceeding with the convention despite clear directives from the court, emphasizing that adherence to judicial orders remains essential in maintaining the rule of law within political organizations.

Wike also addressed developments within the African Democratic Congress, noting that its internal leadership challenges have not been fully resolved even after the court issued directives on the matter, while also drawing a distinction between political parties as institutions and the actions of certain individuals within them, saying, “Not that I don’t like the party, I hate the individuals involved. I don’t like them. They are part of the people who have plunged Nigeria into problems,” Wike stated.
