In a recent interview on Mic On Podcast, on Saturday, June 20, 2026, Prof. Chris Nwaokobia, human rights activist and lawyer, discussed the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections and the electoral strength of major opposition figures.
Nwaokobia argued that Nigeria’s political environment remains highly competitive, with several influential politicians commanding loyal support bases across different regions of the country. He noted that voter preferences are often shaped by long-standing political affiliations, personal convictions, and perceptions of leadership.
Speaking during the interview, Nwaokobia stated, “There are those who believe Atiku is their preferred candidate, and they will vote for him.” He made the remark while explaining how support for various opposition candidates could influence the outcome of the next presidential election.
According to him, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar continues to enjoy the backing of a significant segment of the electorate who believe he remains their best political option. He noted that similar support structures also exist for other prominent opposition figures, making the political contest increasingly complex.
The activist further argued that opposition parties risk weakening their chances if they fail to build consensus around a common strategy. He maintained that divided votes among multiple candidates could ultimately benefit an incumbent seeking re-election.
Nwaokobia also emphasized the importance of issue-based campaigns, urging political leaders to focus on governance, economic recovery, and security rather than personal attacks and divisive rhetoric. He said voters deserve practical solutions to the challenges confronting the nation.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to critically evaluate all candidates ahead of 2027, stressing that the country’s future depends on electing leaders with the competence and vision necessary to address pressing national concerns.
