According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Trust TV on Friday, June 12, 2026, former National Secretary of the defunct Alliance for Democracy, Professor Udenta Udenta, has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission over its handling of the electoral calendar and resistance to court-ordered directives.
Speaking on a Democracy Day special broadcast, Professor Udenta argued that the electoral act, rather than expanding democratic participation, is being weaponised to suffocate opposition parties while shielding the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He warned that laws were no longer being made for the benefit of the people but tailored to serve the interests of the party in power, describing the situation as a dangerous form of state capture spanning the legislature, the judiciary, and INEC itself.
“An entity went to court, defeated INEC, and asked for an extension. INEC then went back to court to challenge the ruling,” he said.
Professor Udenta described INEC’s conduct as a direct assault on democratic participation, warning that such institutional hostility toward opposition parties posed a grave threat to Nigeria’s credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections.
