In a recent interview shared by Arise TV, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oba Maduabuchi, provided further clarification on the legal disputes surrounding the leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and related court judgments.
He stated during the interview that, “What took PDP to court is who are the proper and valid officials of the PDP not Convention.” He explained that the core issue before the courts was not merely procedural disagreements or convention outcomes, but fundamentally the question of legitimacy within the party’s leadership structure. According to him, the central legal challenge focused on determining the rightful and valid officials authorized to speak and act on behalf of the PDP.
Maduabuchi stressed that many of the arguments and controversies surrounding party conventions were secondary to the main legal question. He noted that internal party processes, including conventions and factional activities, only became relevant because they were tied to the dispute over recognized leadership authority.
He further argued that the judiciary’s intervention was necessitated by competing claims within the party, each side asserting legitimacy over national executive positions. This, he said, created the legal foundation for court involvement. He maintained that once the issue of valid party officials is resolved, many of the associated disputes, including conventions and factional claims, would naturally fall into place.
Maduabuchi concluded that the courts were essentially tasked with identifying the authentic leadership of the party, which remains the key determinant in resolving the broader internal crisis affecting the PDP.
