ADC chieftain Solomon Dalung has come to the defence of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde amid the backlash over his comments linking the origins of the 1965 Operation Wetie crisis to Ibadan.
In an interview with Symfoni TV, Dalung argued that Makinde’s remarks simply reflected a strong grasp of history and an honest retelling of past events. He suggested that the governor’s intention was not to provoke controversy but to remind people of historical realities.
According to him, Makinde’s statement should be seen as a candid reflection rather than a cause for criticism. He likened the situation to someone pointing out an obvious truth in a critical setting, noting that acknowledging reality does not make one responsible for the outcome. Dalung added that revisiting history is important to prevent society from repeating past mistakes.
He maintained that the governor was essentially cautioning political actors against assuming that present actions are without precedent, stressing that history offers lessons that should not be ignored.
Dalung concluded that Makinde’s remarks were not meant as a threat but as a timely warning to politicians who continue to misuse power without facing consequences.
