According to a report by The Sun on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Atiku Abubakar has criticised Bola Tinubu over recent remarks concerning his intention to seek re-election, made amid worsening security challenges across several parts of the country.
The former Vice President expressed concern that such comments do not reflect the urgency of the current national situation. In a statement issued through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the President’s remarks as troubling, noting that national focus should be directed toward addressing insecurity and restoring stability rather than engaging in political discussions about future elections.
Atiku referenced Tinubu’s statement in which the President reaffirmed his determination to pursue re-election despite opposition and prevailing national difficulties. Tinubu had also indicated that individuals he believes are contributing to insecurity would not succeed in using the situation to prevent him from remaining in office.
Responding to this, Atiku maintained that the priority of national leadership should be the protection of lives and property. He stressed that Nigerians are currently facing serious security concerns and that leadership communication should reflect sensitivity to these realities instead of emphasizing political continuity.
He further noted that governance is increasingly being assessed based on how effectively the administration responds to insecurity. According to him, the continued loss of lives across various communities remains a critical issue requiring urgent and sustained intervention from those in authority.
Atiku reiterated that the situation demands leadership focused on delivering tangible results in improving security conditions. He emphasized that citizens expect decisive actions that directly address the crisis affecting their daily lives, rather than statements centered on political ambition.
He said, “At a time like this, Nigerians do not need bravado; they need protection. They do not need declarations of staying power; they need proof of leadership.”
