Dr. Stephen Okwori, a security consultant, has attributed the successful rescue of an American citizen kidnapped in Nigeria to the effective deployment of advanced technology, arguing that modern security operations must rely more on intelligence-driven capabilities than conventional methods.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News, on Saturday, 20 June, 2026, Okwori reflected on the high-profile rescue of American citizen Philip Walton, who was abducted in Niger Republic and later taken across the border into Nigeria, where he was reportedly held in Borno State before being rescued by United States special forces.
Using the incident as an example of how technology can transform security operations, Okwori described the precision with which the rescue mission was executed and contrasted it with the challenges often faced in tackling insecurity in the region.
“The US Navy Seal came on a rescue mission, identified his location, and killed six out of the seven abductors. What did they use? Technology,” Okwori said.
According to the security expert, the operation demonstrated the importance of intelligence gathering, surveillance systems, and modern tracking capabilities in combating kidnapping and terrorism. He suggested that security agencies should invest more heavily in technological tools that enable rapid identification of criminal hideouts and accurate targeting during rescue missions.
