According to a report by The Times Of Israel on April 22, 2026, US President Donald Trump says he wants to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed so Iran cannot tax those sailing through the channel.
“They want it open so they can make $500 Million a day,” Trump writes in his latest Truth Social post.
“They only say they want it closed because I have it totally BLOCKADED (CLOSED!). They merely want to save face,” he adds.
Trump does not address the broader economic impact that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could have on the United States or the global economy. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy routes, and any disruption often raises concerns about oil supply stability and shipping costs.
His remarks also appear to differ from the Pentagon’s earlier framing, which described US actions as being aimed primarily at Iran-linked vessels rather than a full closure of the strait itself. This shift in tone has added to uncertainty over the exact scope of Washington’s approach to maritime control in the region.
Trump further claims that if he agrees to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, “There can never be a Deal with Iran, unless we blow up the rest of their country, their leaders included!”
The statement comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a strategic chokepoint for global oil shipments. Any disruption in its operation is closely watched by international markets due to its potential impact on energy prices.
Security analysts continue to warn that escalating rhetoric around the strait could further strain diplomatic relations and increase volatility in global energy markets, even as no formal policy shift has been announced.
