Former Vice President and presidential hopeful of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has begun a series of strategic engagements as he prepares to announce his choice of running mate in the coming weeks.

According to The PUNCH, sources within the party disclosed that Atiku recently met with former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who contested against him during the ADC presidential primary election. Amaechi had earlier raised concerns over the process that produced Atiku as the party’s candidate, after the former Vice President secured 1,846,370 votes to emerge victorious.

The latest meeting followed an earlier visit by Atiku to Amaechi’s Abuja residence about two weeks ago. At the time, Atiku’s media team described the encounter as a discussion between two opposition figures united by a desire to challenge what they described as the failures of the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

According to an insider in the party, Atiku’s consideration of Amaechi as a possible deputy had started before the former minister entered the ADC presidential race he is considering two people. The party source claimed that Atiku views Amaechi as one of the strongest options for the position and would only explore alternatives if Amaechi decided against joining him on the ticket.

The source noted that Amaechi’s performance during the ADC primary, particularly his strong support base across the South-South region, had increased his chances of becoming Atiku’s preferred choice.

“Although political leaders rarely reveal the details of private discussions, Atiku sees Amaechi as someone with the experience, national recognition and political structure needed for the 2027 contest. His showing in the ADC primaries was significant, with Atiku winning states such as Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi and Delta. A partnership between both men could pose a major challenge to the ruling party, but Atiku has two options, he doesn’t know which one to go for,” the source said.

The source further revealed that another camp within Atiku’s circle is pushing for journalist and politician Dele Momodu as a possible alternative running mate.

Those supporting Momodu reportedly believe his loyalty, commitment and ability to work closely with Atiku would make him a dependable partner if the ADC wins the presidency.

The source explained that while Amaechi is respected for his political influence, some party stakeholders consider him too independent-minded and fear possible disagreements in the future. They believe Momodu’s temperament and relationship with Atiku could make for a smoother partnership.

“They see Momodu as someone who may not be a traditional politician but as an ally who would remain focused on supporting the president and advancing national interests,” the source added.
