According to a report by Metro Sport on Thursday July 16, 2026, the Football Association is set to retain Thomas Tuchel as England head coach despite the team’s semi-final defeat to Argentina at the World Cup.

England fell short of the final after conceding twice late on in Atlanta, with Enzo Fernández cancelling out Anthony Gordon’s opener before Lautaro Martínez struck a stoppage-time winner.

The result prompted immediate scrutiny of Tuchel’s tactical decisions, particularly his switch to a more defensive approach after taking the lead.

The German introduced a series of cautious substitutions in the second half, a move that invited sustained pressure from Argentina.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney was among those to criticise the changes, suggesting they ultimately “cost England the game”.

Tuchel, however, stood by his decisions, insisting after the match that he had “no regrets” about his approach.

Despite the criticism, the FA are understood to be committed to their current manager and plan for him to lead the team into the next major tournament.

Tuchel signed a contract extension in February, keeping him in charge through to Euro 2028, which will be hosted across the United Kingdom and Ireland.

That long-term commitment appears to have played a significant role in the FA’s stance following the defeat.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel acknowledged the disappointment but remained focused on the future. “The World Cup is not over,” he said.

“There is still a match to play, even if it is not the one we wanted. Then we keep going. I have a contract until the home Euros and I am looking forward to that, even if it is difficult right now.”

England will now face France in the third-place play-off, offering a chance to end the tournament on a positive note.

However, the manner of their exit, surrendering a lead in the closing stages, has raised broader questions about the team’s game management.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham praised the effort of the squad and coaching staff, while also acknowledging the disappointment felt by supporters.

“It is heart-breaking to be so close,” he said. “The players and Thomas gave everything, and we are all incredibly disappointed not to go further.”
