According to a report by Evening Standard on Thursday July 16, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has handed young defender Landon Emenalo an opportunity to impress after promoting him to the club’s first-team training during pre-season preparations ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The 18-year-old academy prospect joined Chelsea’s senior squad earlier this week as Alonso continues to assess players before the start of the new season.

Landon is the son of former Super Eagles defender Michael Emenalo, who represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Born in Arizona, United States, the young defender is eligible to represent the United States, England and Nigeria at international level.

Michael Emenalo played a key role in Nigeria’s memorable World Cup campaign in 1994 after replacing the injured Benedict Iroha. He featured in matches against Argentina, Greece and Italy, and also provided the assist for Daniel Amokachi’s goal in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Greece.

Landon was spotted training alongside Chelsea’s senior players, including fellow Nigerian-eligible defender Tosin Adarabioyo, at the club’s Cobham training base as preparations for the new campaign continued.

His promotion comes at a time when Chelsea are without several first-team players who are still unavailable following their participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With a number of senior stars yet to return, Alonso has turned to members of the club’s academy to bolster training sessions during the opening stages of pre-season.

The young defender is no stranger to the first-team environment, having previously received three call-ups for senior matches. However, he is still waiting to make his competitive debut for the Blues.

The opportunity to work under Alonso during pre-season could prove significant for Landon as he looks to continue his development and push for a place in Chelsea’s first-team plans.

With pre-season expected to provide several academy players the chance to impress, the defender will be hoping to make the most of his latest opportunity and demonstrate that he is ready to take another step towards senior football at Stamford Bridge.
