2027: NDC strips Kwankwaso camp of tickets
A crisis is brewing in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) over the sharing formula between old and new members in the Kano chapter of the party. Daily Trust gathered that there is an attempt to sideline those who recently joined the NDC alongside the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Daily Trust gathered that at the initial stage, the old members expressed reservations about possible domination following Kwankwaso’s entry into the party. However, both camps later agreed to a 60–40 sharing formula for executive positions and candidates, with Kwankwaso taking the larger share.
The party then proceeded to elect its executives and candidates through consensus, with the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso emerging as the vice presidential candidate of the party, to run with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023. However, almost 10 days after the party released the names of candidates, complaints of marginalisation from the old members resurfaced.
They accused Kwankwaso of not respecting the formula during the selection process, thereby, relegating the old members. In response, five House of Representatives seats and seven state assembly tickets were wrestled from Kwankwaso’s nominees in favour of the old members.
Political leaders not ready to rescue Nigeria – Oyegun
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has questioned whether Nigeria’s political leaders are genuinely committed to rescuing the nation and improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
Odigie-Oyegun made the remarks over the weekend during a telephone interview with Daily Trust in Benin City.
He stated that the daily wave of defections, resignations, and carpet-crossing driven by political disagreements indicates that something is fundamentally wrong with the nation’s political system.
According to him, it appears as though the political class has been infected with a “virus,” as their actions and behavior consistently fail to reflect the best interests of the masses.
Dickson leads closed-door peace talks to halt Kano NDC crisis
The National Democratic Congress has said it is mediating efforts to resolve disagreements between the Kwankwasiya movement and party officials in Kano State, while insisting that no official results have been released from its primary elections in any state.
The party disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, following a closed-door meeting between the national leadership of the Kwankwasiya movement, the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and the NDC leadership.
According to the statement, the meeting was convened to address issues between the Kwankwasiya movement and what it described as legacy officials of the party in Kano State.
The close door meeting was aimed at resolving the issues between the Kwankwasiya movement and the legacy officials of NDC in Kano State,” the party said.
11th Senate to consider six-year single term for president, govs – Lawmaker
Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has disclosed plans to sponsor a bill seeking to introduce a single six-year tenure for presidents and governors after the 2027 general elections.
Bamidele said the proposed legislation would be among the first bills he intends to introduce when the next Senate is inaugurated, arguing that it would enable elected leaders to focus on governance rather than re-election campaigns.
Speaking during an interview with reporters in his office on Tuesday, the lawmaker said the current two-term arrangement often compels officeholders to devote a significant portion of their first term to political calculations and preparations for re-election
One of the first set of bills that I look forward to moving, by God’s grace, when we come back for the 11th Senate, God willing, is for a bill that will only make it possible for anyone who wants to be president of this country, or governor in any part of this country, to spend only one term of six years,” he said.
