The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has warned Christians against dishonouring their parents, saying increased education and social status should never become a reason to disregard parental authority.
Speaking during a recent sermon at the church’s May 2026 Holy Ghost Service, Pastor Adeboye referenced the biblical commandment in the book of Exodus, urging believers to honour their fathers and mothers as instructed by God.
Quoting from the Bible, the cleric cited Exodus 20:12, which emphasizes respect for parents as a pathway to long life. According to him, many people in modern society fail to value their parents because they believe they have surpassed them educationally or financially.
“The counsel of God for you is in Exodus 20:12,” Adeboye said. “You must honor your father and your mother so that your days may be long.”
He lamented what he described as a growing trend among younger generations who look down on their parents after attaining higher education or career success.
“Many of us, because we are more educated than our parents, we don’t honor them. It’s a dangerous thing,” he warned.
Adeboye stressed that dishonouring parents could have spiritual consequences, adding that scripture places importance on family respect and obedience.
“According to the word of God, if you don’t honor your parents, the possibility of you becoming parents is very narrow,” he said.
The pastor also encouraged young people to maintain a relationship with God from an early age, reminding them that divine mercy remains available to those who return to Him after making mistakes.
“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth,” he said while referencing Ecclesiastes 12:1-8. “God is a very kind God. He will forgive you if you go wrong and come back to Him.”
Using the biblical figure Samuel as an example, Adeboye explained that commitment to God at a young age can shape a person’s future.
He noted that Samuel began hearing from God as a child and later became a respected prophet and influential figure in Israel.
