According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Governor of Anambra State, has stated that he would secure the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if he is elected President of Nigeria.

Obi made the declaration while speaking to Nigerians during an engagement in Washington, where he outlined his views on national unity, dialogue, and the handling of agitation across the country.

The former governor maintained that the continued detention of Kanu was not justified, particularly on the basis of comments and remarks made through Radio Biafra.

According to him, expressions made on the platform should not serve as sufficient grounds for prolonged incarceration, stressing that grievances and disagreements are better addressed through engagement rather than detention.

While addressing members of the Nigerian community in Washington, Obi emphasized the need for constructive communication between government authorities and individuals or groups expressing dissatisfaction with the state of the nation.

He noted that many agitators are driven by concerns they consider important and deserving of attention from those in leadership positions.

Obi explained that his approach to governance would prioritize dialogue as a means of resolving disputes and reducing tensions.

He argued that governments must be willing to listen to different viewpoints, especially from groups advocating for various causes, in order to better understand the issues fueling their demands and concerns.

The NDC presidential candidate further indicated that meaningful discussions could provide an opportunity to identify the root causes of agitation and create pathways toward peaceful resolutions.

He suggested that engagement would enable leaders to gain deeper insight into the motivations of those seeking change and help foster mutual understanding.

According to Obi, open communication remains one of the most effective tools for managing disagreements in a diverse society.

He reiterated that bringing stakeholders together for discussions would be a central feature of his administration if entrusted with leadership, adding that listening to differing opinions is essential for national progress and stability.

He said: “If I am in government today, I will discuss with all agitators because I believe that they have a reason for whatever they want to do and it’s only by engaging them that we would learn, but I’m not in a position to do anything today.”
