Eunice Atuejide, former presidential candidate of the National Interest Party (NIP) and a member of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has come to the defense of former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, amid allegations leveled against him by former Labour Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Atuejide stressed the importance of transparency, accountability, and public scrutiny in leadership, arguing that political figures who seek the trust of citizens must be willing to have their records and actions examined.

Her comments came in response to recent allegations made by Okonkwo against Obi, claims that have generated debate within political circles and among supporters of both men. While not dismissing the right of individuals to raise concerns, Atuejide insisted that any allegations should be backed by evidence and subjected to due legal processes.

According to her, one of the key reasons Peter Obi continues to enjoy support from many Nigerians is the perception that he remains accessible to public scrutiny and open to questions regarding his conduct in public office.

“I do not want to follow a man who has a criminal record and whom the public cannot scrutinize,” Atuejide stated.

She argued that citizens should demand openness from all political leaders regardless of party affiliation, adding that public office holders and aspirants must be prepared to answer questions about their actions if they wish to earn and retain public confidence.

Atuejide also challenged Kenneth Okonkwo to present any evidence he may have against Obi through the appropriate legal and public channels rather than relying solely on public accusations. She maintained that democratic societies function best when allegations are investigated through established institutions and legal procedures.

According to her, the ongoing legal dispute involving the parties presents an opportunity for all claims and counterclaims to be thoroughly examined. She said such processes are necessary to ensure fairness and to protect both the accuser and the accused from misinformation or unjust treatment.

“The courts and relevant institutions exist for a reason,” she noted, emphasizing that legal mechanisms provide the proper avenue for determining the validity of allegations.

The NDC member further stated that transparency ultimately benefits both leaders and their supporters because it helps establish credibility and trust. She argued that leaders who have nothing to hide should welcome scrutiny rather than resist it.
