According to report by Nigerian Tribune on Saturday, June 13, 2026, the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun Larooye II, has alleged that he was the target of an assassination attempt during the recent violence that affected Osogbo and Ede communities in Osun State.
The monarch made the claim while addressing members of the Ajegunle Tradesmen and Artisans Group at an event where Governor Ademola Adeleke received endorsements for a second term in office.
According to Oba Larooye, armed men stormed the Ataoja’s Palace and opened fire in what he described as a deliberate attempt to take his life.
He said the attackers shot indiscriminately within the palace premises, causing injuries to some of his aides, although he escaped unharmed.
The traditional ruler stated that the assailants were allegedly motivated by political interests and accused them of being responsible for the violence that spread across several parts of Osogbo earlier in the week. The attacks reportedly created fear among residents and disrupted normal activities in the town.
Expressing concern over the rising level of political violence, the monarch condemned the use of force, intimidation, and bloodshed as tools for pursuing political ambitions. He stressed that political disagreements should never result in violence or threats to lives and property.
Oba Larooye also described the attack on the palace as particularly disturbing because the institution represents the cultural heritage, unity, and identity of the Osogbo people.
He warned that targeting such a revered symbol signaled a dangerous escalation of political hostility within the state.
Despite the incident, the monarch maintained that the attack and alleged threats against him would not discourage him from supporting initiatives he believes will benefit Osogbo and its residents.
He further noted that endorsements received by Governor Adeleke reflected public assessment of his administration and could not be altered through intimidation.
The Ataoja therefore urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the attacks, apprehend those responsible, and take necessary steps to restore peace, safety, and stability across Osogbo and other affected communities.
