According to remarks made by Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure during an interview on Channels Television, the party’s lingering leadership dispute intensified after the 2023 general elections due to actions allegedly taken by former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Abure maintained that the internal disagreements currently affecting the party did not emerge overnight but developed after what he described as a departure from the party’s established structure. He argued that the creation of a separate committee outside the party’s existing framework contributed significantly to divisions among key stakeholders and weakened cohesion within the organisation.

The Labour Party chairman also made allegations regarding the management of campaign funds during the election period. Speaking on the matter, Abure said: “Peter Obi collected money for his campaign, and created a separate account. The campaign fund never come to LP. Where sig Peter Obi himself, Aisha Somtochukwu Yesufu and Asue Ighodalo signed it and those were the people who brought the money for the campaign. Campaign fund never came to LP.”

Abure alleged that the Labour Party did not directly receive the campaign funds and claimed that the account in question was operated by individuals associated with the campaign. He named Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, and Asue Ighodalo as signatories to the account, insisting that the party leadership was not involved in its management.

The allegations have sparked fresh discussions among party members, supporters, and political observers. While some believe the claims warrant further scrutiny, others argue that the accusations could deepen existing divisions within the party.
