2027: No Alliance with APC, Wike-backed PDP Insists
The Peoples Democratic Party faction backed by Nyesom Wike has dismissed reports of any alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting the party remains focused on defeating the APC. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, described claims of a political romance between both parties as misleading, while expressing confidence in the PDP’s ongoing screening and nomination exercise. He said aspirants across several states had shown strong enthusiasm as governorship and presidential screenings commenced.
Meanwhile, PDP stakeholders under the PDP Survival Movement defended the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu-led National Working Committee, arguing that no court ruling removed the existing leadership structure. Speaking in Abuja, the group’s president, Okoh Bartholomew, maintained that the Supreme Court judgment on the party’s convention was being misinterpreted to create confusion within the PDP. The stakeholders also questioned the legality of the Tanimu Turaki-led interim leadership approved by the Makinde-aligned NEC, insisting the current NWC remains the only recognised structure within the party.
Genk Keen on Yira Sor Exit
KRC Genk are reportedly ready to sell Nigerian winger Yira Sor this summer as part of a planned squad overhaul ahead of next season. Belgian reports claimed the club no longer sees Sor and defender Mujaid Sadick as part of their long-term plans, with management believing the players are occupying spaces that could be used to develop younger talents. Sor’s future at the club has become uncertain after struggling to secure a regular starting place since joining Genk in January 2023.
The 25-year-old made only two substitute appearances during the play-offs and is believed to have fallen out of favour under coach Nicky Hayen. Reports also indicated that Turkish clubs are monitoring the winger ahead of a possible transfer, while Genk are open to selling him before his contract expires next year. The development comes shortly after Sor earned his first invitation to the Nigeria national football team under coach Eric Chelle earlier this year.
APC knock-out day: 30 govs, 88 senators, 242 reps, 2,620 others know fate today
The All Progressives Congress is set to release the results of its screening exercise for the 2027 elections, with thousands of aspirants, including governors, senators, House of Representatives members, and presidential hopefuls, awaiting clearance. Among those screened are President Bola Tinubu, who received a waiver, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel. The APC leadership also warned aspirants against violence, anti-party activities, and attempts to disrupt the primaries, stressing that sanctions would be imposed on offenders.
2027: British govt has no preferred candidate, says Envoy
Gill Lever has stated that the British government has no preferred candidate or political party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, stressing that the United Kingdom would not interfere in the country’s political process. Speaking during a visit to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in Ilorin, Lever said Britain’s interest was in supporting peaceful, inclusive and credible elections that respect democratic institutions and participation.
The envoy also praised the Kwara State government for promoting women’s participation in governance and supporting development initiatives. In response, Governor AbdulRazaq highlighted achievements recorded since 2019 in education, healthcare, agriculture and workers’ welfare, including clearing salary backlogs and expanding access to schools and hospitals. He added that the state government planned to raise the minimum wage to ₦100,000 and establish more teaching hospitals before the end of his administration in 2027.
