According to a report by DAILY POST on Wednesday 15th April 2026, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he is ready to support any candidate who emerges as the presidential flagbearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, including former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.
Atiku made the remark during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday, where he was asked if he would step down should Obi secure the ADC presidential ticket.
He explained that his position is based on respect for democratic processes within the party, stressing that whoever wins through a credible primary should be supported by others.
According to him, “I will step aside for any winner,” adding that this principle applies to all aspirants, including Obi.
When asked directly if Obi was included among those he could step aside for, Atiku confirmed, saying there was no issue if Obi emerged as the party’s candidate.
He also dismissed the idea that such a decision would be difficult, noting that politics should be guided by internal democracy, whether through consensus-building or competitive primaries.
Atiku and Obi are among the key figures linked to the ADC presidential race, alongside other politicians such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi, who are also being mentioned as potential contenders.
