Ayu Was The PDP Chairman And Everybody Accepted It, He Was Removed And Damagum Stepped In–Maduabuchi

According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, March 30, 2026, Oba Maduabuchi, a senior advocate in Nigeria, has stated that the PDP will not be able to proceed without a ruling from the Supreme Court.

While discussing the internal and legal matters impacting the party’s structure and future, he made the comment during an interview on Arise Television.

According to Maduabuchi, the expulsion of members associated with the Pro-Wike faction was supported by the Court of Appeal, a stance that is pertinent to the party’s present dilemma.

He stated that part of the disagreement over those members had already been resolved by the appellate court’s legal support.

Despite that decision, he said, the same people were re-elected to the PDP’s National Working Committee at the party’s most recent national convention.

His take is that this further muddied the waters regarding party leadership and caused internal inconsistencies.

He said that the arrangement had widespread support when Iyorchia Ayu was the PDP’s national chairman and linked it back to that time.

According to him, Umar Damagum succeeded Ayu, signifying yet another phase of leadership shifts inside the party.

The fact that Damagum overcame his own obstacles and stayed in office till his term finished in December 2025 was mentioned by Maduabuchi.

He connected these events to the broader fight for party recognition, legitimacy, and control, which has shaped and will continue to shape the party’s internal conflicts.

He said, “For us to appreciate how bad things have gotten, we have to go back to the beginning. Iyorchia Ayu was the national chairman of the PDP, and everybody accepted it.

“He was removed, and Umar Damagum stepped into his shoes. Damagum was having his problems, but whatever it was, he lasted till December 2025 when his tenure ended.

According to him, this chain of events demonstrated that the party had gone through several eras of leadership without ever putting the disagreements in the past.

The political and legal uncertainty surrounding the PDP’s policies, particularly regarding recognition within its structures, was the main topic of his remarks.
