Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the NDC, has responded to comments made by his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, after Kwankwaso disclosed that both men had put in writing an understanding that Obi would spend only one term in office if elected president in 2027.
In a video shared by Advocacy For Good Governance, Obi reaffirmed that his position on the matter has not changed. He said he has consistently maintained that if he wins the 2027 presidential election, he will govern for just one four-year term. Beyond that, he added that he has also made a commitment to promote national unity if given the opportunity to lead.Watch video here
Speaking on the issue, Obi stressed that the pledge should not be reduced to the presence or absence of a signed document. He argued that a leader’s public declaration carries the weight of an agreement and ought to be treated as a promise to the people.
In Obi’s words: “It is not a question of signed agreement, a leaders statement should be an agreement, it should be a promise. I have said it repeatedly that I will serve for 4 years just like I said I will unite the country. So these are agreements. Do you know what it means when you do campaign promise, it is agreement with the people”
His remarks appeared aimed at clarifying his long-standing stance on a single-term presidency while also reinforcing the idea that campaign promises are binding commitments made directly with voters.
