A suspected bandit leader, Abdul Lankai, has explained his version of the events that led to a deadly clash between his group and members of a community in Katsina State, saying the incident disrupted ongoing peace efforts.
In a video shared by News Central TV, according to Lankai, he received information that some of his men had been detained by local vigilantes. Believing that a peace agreement was still in place, he reportedly assured them that there was no cause for alarm. However, the phone call was suddenly interrupted, and he claimed to hear signs of confusion and violence in the background.
Lankai said he immediately gathered some of his followers and went to the area to find out what was happening. On arrival, he alleged that armed vigilantes had laid an ambush and opened fire on them from different directions.
He maintained that the attack left him with no option but to defend himself and his men. Lankai further claimed that three of his fighters had previously been killed and that the vigilantes were trying to kill him as well.

The bandit leader said the confrontation resulted in the deaths of 15 people. He insisted that he remains open to peace talks but demanded the return of weapons allegedly seized from his group, as well as the bodies of his deceased fighters.
In his words, “They started shooting at us from every angle. Am I supposed to leave them to kill me just because I want peace to continue? I needed to protect myself, their intentions were to kill me. That’s why I killed 15 people.”
