According to a report by The Vanguard on Friday, June 12, 2026, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has defended the legislative scrutiny of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), strongly dismissing claims that his actions have turned him into a burden to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking in Akure, the lawmaker reacted to controversies surrounding the Senate Committee on Public Accounts’ review of NNPCL’s audited reports from 2017 to 2023.

Oshiomhole insisted that the investigative panel is merely doing its constitutional duty by probing mind-boggling figures.

The independent audit reports highlighted transactions totaling approximately N210 trillion that require urgent legislative clarification.

“What I am saying demonstrates the beauty of democracy. Under military rule, I could not make such statements and return home freely,” Oshiomhole declared.

Explaining the committee’s findings, Oshiomhole revealed that NNPCL officials cited massive losses, including over N107 trillion allegedly stuck in insolvent financial institutions and another N103 trillion linked to transactions with marketers and tanker operators.

The committee has now demanded full documentation, with Oshiomhole questioning how trillions could vanish without a trail.

The Senator rejected accusations that his aggressive stance undermines the current presidency. He pointed out that the financial queries under investigation occurred entirely between 2017 and 2022, long before President Tinubu took office.

Oshiomhole also admitted that his stance on fuel subsidy evolved as the annual cost ballooned from tens of billions into unsustainable trillions of naira.

He explained that the old system had ultimately transformed into a channel for diverting public wealth, forcing him and other leaders to support its removal for the country’s economic survival.
