According to report by Vanguard on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Blessing Fubara, the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State, has dismissed claims that his political ambition is being driven by a godfather or that he is simply serving the interests of his elder brother, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday night, he insisted that his aspiration is self-motivated, anchored on personal conviction, and shaped by a clear long-term vision rather than influence from any political sponsor or external power bloc.
He maintained that his goals are straightforward and not dependent on any hidden hand directing his political path.
He further stressed that he operates independently without any political godfather, adding that his decisions are guided by faith and personal principles.
According to him, attempts to frame his ambition as being controlled by powerful figures distort the purpose and direction of his political journey.
On his relationship with the Rivers State governor, Blessing Fubara clarified that they are not aligned politically and do not share the same ideological stance.
He noted that Nigerians are already aware of past disagreements involving the governor and his former political party, which, according to him, reflect differences in ideology rather than coordinated political action.
He also spoke on the broader political climate in Rivers State, describing it as tense and filled with competing narratives from various political interests.
He urged that attention should be directed toward resolving governance challenges in the state rather than being distracted by politically motivated stories.
Fubara officially joined the governorship race in May 2026 after obtaining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) nomination and expression of interest forms.
His entry into the race comes amid ongoing political friction in Rivers State involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara, former governor and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and shifting alliances marked by factional disputes and withdrawals that have shaped the state’s political landscape.
He maintained focus on rescuing and stabilising governance in Rivers State going forward.
