In a report by the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Michael Freeman, the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, described Israel as a country that strives for peace and coexistence with its neighbors, despite facing decades of regional tensions and conflicts.

He shared this perspective during the 78th Independence Day celebration in Abuja, where he highlighted Israel’s enduring dedication to stability and diplomatic relations.

In his speech, Freeman condemned the actions of Hezbollah, claiming that the group hinders peace initiatives and undermines diplomatic efforts.

He stated that such behavior continues to contribute to instability in the region, making it more challenging to achieve lasting peace.

The envoy also mentioned the recent tensions involving Iran, emphasizing that Israel’s response aligned with its commitment to protect its citizens.

He highlighted the critical nature of the situation, stating, “In the past 24 hours, Iran has fired ballistic missiles at Israeli civilian areas.”

He further illustrated the human toll of these attacks, saying, “While we are gathered here, millions of Israeli men, women, and children – including our friends and families – are currently taking refuge in bomb shelters.”

Freeman contended that ongoing violence has consistently obstructed opportunities for peace, remarking, “Whenever a chance for peace arises, Iran and its allies opt for violence, murder, and terror instead of coexistence.”

He concluded with a call for change, urging the international community to act decisively. “It is time to stop allowing Iran and other extremists and outside actors to hold the future of our region hostage,” he said.
