According to the Anadolu agency, Iran’s military says it carried out an operation against a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Sea of Oman, marking another sharp escalation in the increasingly tense waters surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement, made by the Iranian army’s naval forces and reported by Iran’s Mehr news agency, alleged that the vessel housed a “command and control center” responsible for actions against Iranian commercial shipping. Iranian officials said the destroyer had been operating near the country’s territorial waters when it was targeted.
According to the report, the operation took place overnight. Iranian authorities described it as a response to what they called aggressive actions by the U.S. military, including alleged attacks on Iranian commercial ships in the Sea of Oman and violations of navigation rules in the Strait of Hormuz.
While details of the incident remain limited, the claim is significant because it comes at a time when maritime security in the region is under intense scrutiny. The Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz serve as vital arteries for global trade and energy shipments, meaning any military confrontation there has the potential to draw international attention and raise concerns far beyond the region.
