In a recent interview shared by News Central, lawyer and political analyst Liborous Oshoma examined the ongoing legal and internal crises affecting major opposition parties and the possible implications for future elections in Nigeria. He focused on the urgency required to resolve leadership disputes and stabilize party structures.

Oshoma warned that persistent litigation and internal fragmentation could weaken the capacity of opposition parties to function effectively ahead of the 2027 general elections. He stated, “If Opposition parties do not act quickly, it may be difficult for them to field candidates in 2027.” He explained that unresolved court cases and competing leadership claims are already slowing down key administrative processes within the parties.

He noted that electoral preparations require clear leadership, valid membership registers, and compliance with electoral guidelines, all of which become difficult when parties are divided by legal battles. According to him, continuous court interventions and factional disagreements risk pushing parties into a state of organisational paralysis.

Oshoma further emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission and other regulatory bodies operate within strict timelines, leaving little room for politically unstable parties to catch up if delays persist.

He concluded that the situation should serve as a warning to opposition groups to prioritize internal reconciliation and legal clarity. In his view, failure to act decisively may not only affect party competitiveness but could also reshape the overall structure of political participation in the 2027 elections.
