According to a report by Fox News, on Wednesday April 22, 2026, In a significant escalation of maritime enforcement efforts, the U.S. Navy has successfully intercepted and boarded a stateless tanker suspected of smuggling Iranian crude oil.
The operation, which took place in the Bay of Bengal, underscores the Pentagon’s commitment to tightening its blockade on Iran despite an approaching ceasefire deadline.
The vessel, identified as the M/T Tifani, was intercepted by U.S. forces in international waters between India and Southeast Asia.
According to military officials, the tanker had loaded approximately 1.9 million barrels of Iranian crude oil at Kharg Island earlier this month and was navigating toward a destination in or near Singapore.
The Pentagon confirmed the boarding took place “without incident” and reiterated its broader strategy to disrupt networks providing material support to Tehran.
“International waters are not a refuge for sanctioned vessels,” a Pentagon spokesperson stated. The Department of War further emphasized, “As we have made clear, we will pursue global maritime enforcement efforts to disrupt illicit networks and interdict sanctioned vessels providing material support to Iran anywhere they operate.”
The vessel had been under sanctions by the U.S. Treasury Department since last July. Because the Tifani was operating without a recognized flag, it lacked the standard protections afforded to registered vessels, allowing U.S. forces to exercise a right-of-visit to conduct a maritime interdiction.
This interception arrives at a critical diplomatic juncture. As a two-week U.S.-Iranian ceasefire nears its expiration, Tehran has publicly labeled the ongoing U.S. maritime blockade of its ports an “act of war.” Iranian officials have stated that they will refuse to engage in peace negotiations while the blockade remains in force.
