In a bold declaration that signals a significant shift in the execution of public projects, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stark warning that he expects to face a coordinated backlash from individuals who benefited from previous government contracts. The minister’s statement came during the launch of a hybrid solar lighting project in Abuja, where he outlined his administration’s new approach to project management aimed at eliminating corruption and ensuring accountability.
Wike explained that under the old system, contractors frequently exploited the concept of “maintenance” as a pretext to secure payments without delivering substantial work. His administration is now implementing a direct management model where the companies responsible for projects will maintain them, thereby closing loopholes that previously allowed for the misuse of public funds. “This will block opportunities for misuse of funds,” the minister asserted, highlighting the transparency mechanism embedded in the new framework.

Anticipating resistance from entrenched interests, Wike revealed that he expects critics to employ ethnic and religious narratives to undermine his reforms. He specifically predicted that disgruntled parties would claim preferential treatment for certain ethnic groups in contract awards, stating they would allege, “‘They did it because I’m the Igbo man who is supplying all the cables, I’m the Igbo man who is supplying the generators.'”
The minister further warned that these actors would leverage social media and radio platforms to launch campaigns against his administration. Despite these anticipated attacks, Wike remained resolute, insisting that such tactics would not deter his commitment to effective governance. He characterized the expected opposition as coming from those “used to benefiting from loopholes in the system” who are now “unhappy to see things done differently.” His firm stance underscores a determined effort to prioritize accountability over political convenience in the management of the nation’s capital.
