The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has voided the contract for the 13-kilometre Apo–Karshi Road after years of delays.
The project, first awarded in 2011 to Kakatar Construction Company Ltd under former FCT Minister Bala Mohammed, was revoked over what the minister described as chronic non-performance.
Wike disclosed the decision on Thursday during an assessment tour of key road projects across the territory, including the Karu–Customs–CBN Road, the Gishiri–Katampe link, and the Apo–Wasa carriageway.
Concerned by the lack of progress on the Apo–Karshi project, he explained that the contract has now been reassigned on an emergency basis to SCC Nigeria Limited, a firm he says has the capacity to deliver. Work is already back in motion at the site.
He noted that public infrastructure “should not be reduced to political tools,” stressing that residents deserve timely and quality services.
The minister also confirmed that the long-delayed Kubwa–Bwari Road has been officially awarded and construction is underway, creating an additional route for daily commuters.
During the inspection tour, Wike engaged a shop owner whose building had been marked for demolition for obstructing a major water channel. While the woman protested, the minister assured her of full compensation but maintained that the structure must be removed to avert flooding and protect the wider community, adding that public interest supersedes personal grievances.
Wike praised the enthusiastic welcome he received from communities along the project corridors, describing it as evidence that residents appreciate the administration’s development drive. He added that governance is ultimately about improving citizens’ quality of life.
He further revealed that several ongoing road projects are expected to be completed and commissioned as part of President Bola Tinubu’s third-anniversary activities.
Wike maintained that no fresh contracts will be initiated in 2026, noting that the FCT Administration intends to concentrate on finishing all projects launched in 2025 since “2026 is a political year.”
