Week long power outage grounds businesses, disrupts daily life in Taraba, Adamawa

The ongoing week-long power outage across Taraba and Adamawa states has begun to severely impact residents and businesses, following a planned shutdown announced by the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, YEDC.

The blackout, which began on Monday, December 1, 2025, as gathered by Daily Post, is part of a major maintenance project currently underway on key transmission facilities in the two states.

As of the time of filing this report, several communities remain in total darkness, with economic activities significantly disrupted.

Affected areas in the two aforementioned states include Jalingo, Zing, Lau, Mutum-Biyu, Mayo-Belwa, Jeda, Ganye, and Toungo.

Residents across the affected communities who spoke with our reporter via telephone interviews have reported complete outages since the commencement of the exercise.

In Jalingo, business owners say the absence of electricity has rendered them unproductive. Many have also raised concerns over rising prices of essential items, particularly sachet water and chilled beverages, attributing the increase to vendors’ inability to power refrigerators and other equipment.

Several small-scale entrepreneurs who spoke to Daily Post lamented that the shutdown has made it nearly impossible to remain in business. They appealed to YEDC to accelerate the maintenance process and restore electricity by the promised deadline of December 8, 2025.

YEDC, it would be recalled, had earlier stated that the outage was necessary to enable MBH Power Contractor to complete rehabilitation and reinforcement work at the 330/132 kV and 132/33 kV transmission stations in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) also confirmed that the project includes connecting a turn-in-turn-out 330 kV transmission line, a development expected to enhance grid stability and improve power reliability across the region.

“During the maintenance period, electricity supply from both the Mayo-Belwa and Jalingo transmission stations will be unavailable,” YEDC reiterated in its statement.

As observed by our correspondent, residents across the two states now await the December 8 restoration date with growing urgency, hoping for a swift return to normalcy.
