Senator representing Kaduna South, Barr. Sunday Katung, has left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the All Progressives Congress.
The move comes at a tense moment for the PDP, especially following a court ruling stopping its 2025 national convention.
Katung confirmed the defection in a statement issued on Saturday. He said his decision was taken after “deep consultations” and a commitment to deliver more results for his constituency under the ruling party.
According to him, the last few weeks offered a period of reflection and discussions with stakeholders, supporters, and political allies. He noted that “politics is dynamic” and insisted that his move was driven by service, not personal interest.
He also highlighted what he called strong support from President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, adding that collaboration with the government would bring “phenomenal and epoch-making development” to Southern Kaduna.
The senator stressed that the APC has shown “a genuine commitment to inclusion, equity, and progress” in the zone, and he expressed confidence that joining the party would ensure better representation and access to decision-making.
In his words, he appealed to supporters who may feel unhappy with the shift, explaining that friendships and relationships should not be destroyed by political differences.
He quoted Thomas Jefferson, stating, “I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, or in philosophy as cause for withdrawing from a friend.”
Katung urged his constituents to remain united as he begins what he described as a new chapter focused on development and greater impact in the region.
The defection adds to the growing political realignments ahead of the next election cycle, and observers say the move could reshape power dynamics in Southern Kaduna.
However , according to reports, it more lawmakers from the state may join him in the coming days.
Recall POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported just recently, that internal tensions within the PDP escalated after a Federal High Court in Abuja barred the party from holding its national convention, deepening uncertainty in the opposition camp.
