Tension At National Assembly As JAMB Officials Walk Out On Lawmakers

A mild drama played out in the National Assembly on Wednesday when some officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), staged a walkout during a session with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.

Naija News understands that the lawmakers had requested JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, to present some documents before the committee.

However, Oloyede was absent on Wednesday and was represented by a Director of the Board, Mufutau Bello, who arrived at the National Assembly complex with other JAMB officials.

According to Channels Television, trouble started when Bello insisted that journalists could not be allowed in the room during his presentation, as he argued that the documents he intended to present contained sensitive information.

His request, however, was rejected by the committee members, who insisted that the proceedings were public and that the JAMB official could not dictate to them how to conduct their affairs.

Following the disagreement, the agitated JAMB official angrily ordered his team to leave the meeting, and they walked out of the session, leaving lawmakers startled.

In response, the legislators directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the JAMB officials, but they had already left the premises.

Thereafter, the Committee has now issued an ultimatum of next Tuesday to JAMB for the Registrar to appear in person and present all the requested documents.

The Committee added that failure to adhere to the deadline could lead to the issuance of a warrant of arrest.
