Many students of law, who finished their studies in Abia State University, Uturu, between two and four years ago, have cried out that the University is yet to approve their names for Law School.
This is even as the Dean, Faculty of Law of the University, Professor Chijioke Collins confirmed the situation, saying that efforts are on to tackle the backlog he inherited from his predecessor.
The students, who said that more than five hundred of them have been at their parents’ homes for about four years despite completing all their academic clearances, described it as unfair treatment.
Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, the leader of the law students, who simply identified herself as Miss Cherry, for the fear of being victimized, said that several appeals they made in the past to get their names approved, were ignored in favour of fresh graduating sets.
The concerned law students also alleged that there is a fresh plan by Abia State University to only compile the names of the 2025 graduating set, regretting that the situation has made them spend about ten years in the University without graduating.
The students appealed to Governor Alex Otti and the management of the University to urgently investigate their matter so that they can go to Law School and be called to bar.
“It has been frustrating and shameful staying at home after about four years of finishing our studies, let our names be approved for Law School”, Miss Cherry appealed, in tears.
But speaking at the Law Campus of Abia State University Uturu, located in Umuahia, Professor Collins said he was aware of about 700 backlog of students yet to go to the Law School, but that he is doing everything to see that the backlog is cleared.
Collins, who appealed to the agitated students to remain calm, said that his office is appealing to the State apparatus to help the University in securing the supplementary set for April 2026.
“We are having about seven hundred backlog. This new set we compiled will go in February 2026, supplementary may begin in April.
“So, if anybody’s name is not here now, the person’s name may still come up in April”, he said.
