Sowore Condemns Assault on Activist ‘Mama Pee’ at Benin Airport, Calls for Arrest and Prosecution of Attackers

SaharaReporters reported the attack on Mama Pee on Saturday. It followed her reported confrontation with Abure at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where she accused him of frustrating Nigerians.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has strongly condemned the attack on Precious Onuche, popularly known as Mama P, by thugs suspected to be loyal to the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, at the Benin Airport in Edo State.

SaharaReporters reported the attack on Mama Pee on Saturday. It followed her reported confrontation with Abure at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where she accused him of frustrating Nigerians.

According to eyewitnesses, Mama Pee saw Abure at the airport trying to board a plane and told him, “Is it not Julius Abure? You’re the one frustrating Nigerians.” Abure responded with, “How can?”

Mama Pee continued, “In case nobody has told you, you’re the one frustrating Nigerians. Are you not Julius Abure? What are you now doing with Labour Party? Police are looking for you. You’ve destroyed the Labour Party, and you’re entering an aeroplane? May God punish all of you.”

The situation escalated upon arrival at Benin Airport, where Mama Pee was attacked by suspected thugs loyal to Abure, inflicting injuries on her. Despite the attack, the police arrested and detained her, letting the attackers go free.

Reacting to the assault, Sowore, a former presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), condemned the attack on Mama Pee, describing it as unacceptable.

“I strongly condemn the Benin City airport attack on MamaPee, a courageous political activist who uses social media effectively to call out societal wrongs,” Sowore said.

“This attack is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.”

Sowore demanded that security agencies take immediate action to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“Security agencies must ensure that the assailants are promptly arrested and prosecuted, and that MamaPee is protected at all costs,” he said.

The attack on Mama Pee has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for swift action to apprehend the culprits.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong Esq. stated that the Edo State Police Command’s decision to detain Mama Pee was utterly disgraceful and condemnable, noting that the evidence available so far showed that she did not commit any offence known to the law.

He emphasised that she was only exercising her right to free speech when she questioned Abure about his political activities.

Effiong, who demanded her release, cited Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which guarantees every person the right to freedom of expression.

According to him, Mama Pee’s interaction with Abure was peaceful and did not involve any physical contact or disruption.

He said, “There is no law in Nigeria that shields a politically exposed person from being heckled, yelled at, or questioned by aggrieved citizens in public spaces.

“Every enlightened person knows that such non-violent acts of protestation is a regular occurrence in civilized countries. We have been seeing Presidents, Kings, and Prime Ministers across the world being held accountable through heckling.

“President Trump, despite his disposition towards heckling, has faced protesters in public spaces who heckled regularly at him. I have carefully watched the videos of Mama P’s interaction and encounter with Julius Abure.

“The following facts are apparent on the face of the video evidence: Mama P did not assault or touch Julius Abure in any manner. She did not disrupt the flight. She did not spit on him. She did not drag him off the plane. She also did not prevent Julius Abure from boarding the flight or from departing the Benin Airport when the Max Air flight landed from Abuja,” he had said.

“She stood few meters away from Abure. All that she did was to ask him if he was not Julius Abure, and that he was the one frustrating Nigerians. She did not go beyond verbal protestations. She wasn’t even screaming at him.

“Based on the available evidence, nothing remotely amounts to a crime in the conduct of Mama P. The fact that the thugs were summoned to waylaid her upon landing in Benin shows that the assault on her was premeditated,” he added.”
