A joint assessment team comprising officials from the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of areas affected by recent flooding in the area.
This is following a report received from Gadanaji local government area of Sokoto State.
The flood caused widespread destruction to houses, farmlands, and critical community infrastructure across several communities, including Gada, Tsitse and Gilbade.
According to the local council representatives, Kabiru Usman (Gada Ward), Sahabi Abdullahi (Tsitse Ward) and Ahmed Tambari (Gilbade Ward), “The assessment exercise is aimed at guiding the state government and relevant humanitarian agencies in providing timely relief support and long-term recovery assistance to the affected communities.”
Led by the Sokoto SEMA team, the assessment team identified numerous households and farmlands impacted by the disaster.
The incident resulted in injuries to 11 persons, death of two children and one elderly person.
Preliminary findings from the joint team revealed that a total of 2,814 persons were affected by the flood, with hundreds of hectares of farmland submerged across the affected wards.
Public infrastructure such as a mosque at Dantudu Bobawa and several schools, including Damarki Primary School, Tunga Primary School and Musuki Primary School were also severely impacted by the flood.
