According to TalkSPORT, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will be available for selection against Brighton this weekend despite being sent off just minutes into the defeat to Manchester United.
The Spaniard’s early dismissal at Old Trafford sparked controversy, but Premier League rules mean his suspension has already been served — giving Enzo Maresca a huge boost ahead of a crucial Stamford Bridge clash.
Sanchez’s red card came in chaotic circumstances. With only four minutes played, he rushed out of his box and clattered into Bryan Mbeumo, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Referee Peter Bankes wasted no time producing the red card, leaving Chelsea fans stunned and pundits claiming he had “killed” the game before it even began. The Blues were forced to reshuffle, with Estevao Willian sacrificed for backup goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. Unsurprisingly, the disruption contributed to a damaging 2-1 defeat.

Many supporters assumed Sanchez would now miss multiple league games, but the reality is different. Because his dismissal was for denying a goalscoring chance — rather than violent conduct — the ban was limited to just one match.
That suspension carried over to domestic competitions, meaning Sanchez was ineligible for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Lincoln City. With the penalty served, the 27-year-old is free to start against his former club Brighton on Saturday.
Had the challenge been deemed violent conduct, Sanchez would have faced a three-game suspension, ruling him out of several crucial fixtures. Instead, Chelsea will welcome back their first-choice goalkeeper just in time for a fixture that could define their momentum heading into October.
The timing could not be better for Maresca. Chelsea’s win against Lincoln stopped a worrying run of three games without victory, but their Premier League form still needs a serious lift.
Stamford Bridge has been a relatively safe haven this season, with a draw against Crystal Palace and a win over Fulham, but facing Brighton — even one without key absentees — is a different test altogether.
Brighton arrive weakened, with injuries piling up and loanee Facundo Buonanotte ruled out due to Premier League rules preventing players from facing their parent clubs.
For Chelsea, the Argentine’s absence is a frustration after he scored his first goal in midweek. The focus will instead fall on Sanchez, who will not only want to redeem himself after his Old Trafford nightmare but also prove a point against the club where he rose to prominence.
