Reduce your consumption of these four foods to prevent kidney disease

Kidney disease means that the kidneys are damaged and cannot filter the blood as they should. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, your risk of kidney disease is higher.

According to healthline, foods high in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus, listed below, should be limited or avoided. Dietary restrictions and nutrient intake recommendations depend on the severity of kidney dysfunction.

Dairy products

Dairy products are rich in vitamins and minerals. They are also a good source of protein and a natural source of phosphorus and potassium.

However, excessive consumption of dairy products combined with other phosphorus-rich foods can damage the health of people with kidney disease.

Brown rice

Brown rice, like wholemeal bread, is a whole grain with a higher potassium and phosphorus content than white rice. One cup of cooked brown rice contains 150 mg of phosphorus and 154 mg of potassium, while one cup of cooked white rice has 69 mg of phosphorus and 54 mg of potassium.

Brown rice may be acceptable in a kidney diet, but only if the portion is controlled and balanced with other foods to avoid excessive daily intake of potassium and phosphorus.


Bananas are known for their high potassium content. Although bananas are naturally low in sodium, a medium-sized banana contains 422 mg of potassium.

If you have been told that you need to limit your potassium intake, it can be difficult to do so if you eat a banana every day. Unfortunately, many other tropical fruits are also high in potassium.


Tomatoes are another potassium-rich fruit that may not be suitable for a kidney diet. They can be eaten raw or cooked and are often used to make sauces. One cup of tomato sauce contains up to 900 mg of potassium.
