Olayinka Criticizes Rufai: Says Self-Pride Stopped Him From Addressing Umahi Respectfully

I listened to Rufai addressing Umahi as You Olayinka, an aide to Nyesom Wike, has criticized TV host Rufai Oseni for the way he spoke to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a recent television interview.

The exchange between Rufai and the minister became tense after the journalist asked about some ongoing federal road projects, which Umahi felt were asked in a disrespectful tone.

Reacting to the incident on his X account, Olayinka said he was disappointed to hear Rufai address the minister as “you guys.” According to him, such language is not appropriate when speaking to a government official in an official capacity.

Olayinka added that he had once advised Rufai on proper professional conduct, especially in journalism, where respect and courtesy are important when interviewing public officials.

He explained that while journalists have the duty to ask tough questions, they must also do so with politeness and without letting pride or personal feelings get in the way. Olayinka suggested that Rufai’s attitude showed self-pride, which he believes prevents him from learning and improving his communication style.

In his words, “I listened to Rufai addressing the Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi as ‘You Guys.’ I once lectured this man that in journalism, there are words you don’t use to address people, especially in their official capacity. Obviously, Self-Pride won’t let Rufai Oseni do the needful.
