Ogun Assembly resolves over 100 disputes, seeks special court for land grabbing cases

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, said in the last one year, over 100 issues relating to land, chieftaincy, environmental and transport unions were resolved by the House.

Elemide stated that these issues if not properly handled could have caused disharmony amongst citizens, stakeholders and breached the peace of the state.

The Speaker disclosed that over 90 percent of petitions received were centered on land grabbing, stressing the need for a special court to enforce anti-land grabbing law.

He stated this during the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill by Governor Dapo Abiodun at the Assembly on Wednesday.

Elemide noted that other achievements accomplished by the House include the passage of 19 bills covering energy, education, local government and environmental issues, amongst others.

He added that a total of 58 motions were passed into resolutions, covering a wide range of issues relating to general administration, security, land matters, local government, education, finance, judiciary, audit, public works and infrastructure, community development, parks, garages and traffic compliance and enforcement.

The Speaker said, “The House also mediated on issues that could have caused disharmony amongst Citizens and Stakeholders or breach the peace of the State. In the last one year, over One Hundred (100) issues relating to land, chieftaincy, environmental and transport unions brought to the attention of the House were resolved amicably.

“Let me at this juncture, emphasise the need for a Special Court to enforce the Anti-Land Grabbing Law as this accounted for over 90% of all petitions received by the House and majority of the issues have been amicably resolved.

“It is pertinent to state that the House has not relent in ensuring that funds appropriated in the Yearly Budgets were expended on projects for which they were meant. We did not only invite Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to give accounts of their expenditures, we also visit projects sites and other relevant places for fact-finding mission.

“There is therefore, the need for provision of new utility vehicles to strengthen our oversight functions as the present buses you previously repaired for us has become aging, over-serviced and at times are being towed to office whenever we go for oversight functions.”

Elemide expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun for releasing funds for the payment of salaries and allowances to newly hired employees, as well as a wardrobe allowance for the entire staff, saying it had undoubtedly lifted their morale.

While assuring the governor of the House’s continuous support and cooperation, the Speaker sought the approval for the increase in its monthly running cost, considering incessant spike in prices of products and services occasioned by the removal of petroleum subsidy and increase in Value Added Tax.

“Your Excellency, for your love and support to be more pronounced, this Honourable House seek for your kind consideration and approval of the following: Provision of official vehicles for the Clerk, Deputy Clerks and Management Staff, provision of Hilux Pick-up for the Speaker, provision of clinic and medical equipment and provision of office furniture in our offices, committee rooms and the ground floor currently being renovated,” he added.
