Oba of Benin suspends village chief priest over customs breach

Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has suspended Chief Sunday Enoma, the traditional priest (Ohen-Ovia) of Unuamen Village in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area, for allegedly violating established Benin customs and traditions.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Oba’s Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguobaro.

In the statement, Oba Ewuare reaffirmed Chief Kingsley Igbinosa as the Okao, or traditional head, of Unuamen Village.

The Oba dismissed claims by the suspended priest that he had a role in installing the Okao, labeling such assertions as baseless, unfounded, and unacceptable.

Oba Ewuare emphasized that the conferment of all chieftaincy titles within the Benin Kingdom remains the exclusive prerogative of the Oba.
