As uncertainty continues to surround the sudden fire outbreak in Oba Market amid the ongoing controversy over market leadership, normalcy is gradually returning to the market, a day after a late-night fire.
An unconfirmed source suggested that the inferno was allegedly caused by a faulty solar panel and improper electrical connections, which destroyed a single shop and caused panic among traders and residents in the area. Residents are, however, awaiting an official government statement to determine the next steps.
The quick intervention of firefighters and security personnel prevented the flames from spreading to other sections of the market. This development has once again raised concerns among residents about the recurring nature of fire outbreaks in the market.

At the scene, traders, passersby, and market inhabitants were seen assessing the extent of the damage to the affected shop, which belongs to Mr. Christian Igwe, a wholesaler of clothes and shoes.
Accounts from some traders suggest that the fire may have been triggered by a solar panel fault and improper wiring connections. They disclosed that this marks the second time the same shop has suffered such colossal damage and appealed for urgent government intervention.
“We don’t actually know what happened, but we suspect a solar panel and some faulty electrical connections.
The situation caused panic for all of us in the area. Thank God the fire was quickly curtailed by firefighters,” one trader said.
The Acting Chairman of Oredo Local Government, Hon. Engineer Gabriel Iduseri, who led an inspection team to the scene, assured affected traders of the government’s prompt support to cushion their losses.
Similarly, the Edo State Emergency Management Agency was at the scene to seal off the affected section and commence a preliminary investigation to determine the actual cause of the fire.
