Nigerian Government Sounds Alarm Over Deteriorating Health of Pastor Detained in Benin Republic

The Federal Government has voiced concerns over the deteriorating health condition of a Nigerian citizen, Pastor Benjamin Egbaji, who is currently on trial in the Republic of Benin.

In a statement issued on Monday by Dr. Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the government described Egbaji’s situation as deeply troubling. The cleric and businessman from Cross River State has reportedly been detained for nearly two years in a Cotonou hospital under what were described as “dehumanising conditions.”

According to the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appealed to the Beninese authorities to grant Egbaji’s release to enable him to access adequate medical care and, if necessary, serve the remainder of his sentence in Nigeria.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, reiterated the government’s concern, noting that reports from the Nigerian Mission in Cotonou indicate that the pastor’s health had continued to decline. She emphasized that the ministry has made consistent diplomatic efforts to secure his transfer in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and its commitment to citizen diplomacy.

“The discussions with our mission in Cotonou reveal that Pastor Egbaji’s health condition is worsening and he requires urgent medical attention,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated. “We have made spirited efforts to ensure his release in accordance with our administration’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad.”

The minister, who personally visited Egbaji in Cotonou in August alongside Benin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olushegun Bakari, said Nigeria had formally requested the transfer of the detained cleric to a facility in Nigeria for appropriate medical care.

She, however, expressed concern over the slow response from the Beninese authorities and urged them to expedite the process, citing the longstanding ties of friendship and cultural affinity between both nations.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu further disclosed that Nigeria’s position and appeal for Egbaji’s release were reinforced in a recent diplomatic correspondence to the Government of the Republic of Benin.
