According to Punch, The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has significantly increased its daily passport production capacity from approximately 300 to 5,000, following the launch of a new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre in Abuja. The development marks a major step forward in the country’s passport issuance process, which has historically been plagued by delays and inefficiencies.
The new facility was unveiled during an inspection by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who highlighted the upgrade as a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s 62-year history of passport administration. The initiative replaces the old decentralised model, which relied on outdated equipment and was only capable of producing around 250 to 300 passports per day.
Now, with the centralised system in place, NIS is able to produce between 4,500 and 5,000 passports daily, all within four to five hours of operation. The shift to centralisation brings Nigeria’s passport issuance in line with international standards, allowing for greater consistency, efficiency, and document security.

The system not only accelerates production time but also paves the way for the government’s goal of issuing passports within one week. This ambition aligns with the current two-week delivery timeline, with the hope that continued automation and optimisation will further enhance the process.
The centralised passport system is part of broader public service reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, aimed at improving service delivery and rebuilding public trust in government institutions. Officials say that moving to a single, technology-driven system enhances transparency and reduces the chances of manipulation or duplication in passport processing.
The new personalisation centre also supports the secure storage and management of biometric data, helping to increase the credibility of Nigerian travel documents on the global stage. The upgrade is expected to significantly reduce the backlog of applications, minimise bottlenecks at immigration offices, and make the passport application process more predictable for Nigerians at home and abroad.
This development is seen as a long-overdue transformation of a system that had become synonymous with inefficiency, and it marks a significant push toward digital governance in Nigeria. With passport demands consistently high, especially from the diaspora community, the enhanced capacity is expected to bring much-needed relief to applicants.
As implementation continues, the government plans to expand the centralised system’s benefits across more passport offices nationwide, ensuring that the new standard becomes the norm in all regions of the country.
